History of From the First Tooth

In 2007, after an extensive period of study during which the Foundation decided it would focus its attention on children’s oral health, we established and began a pilot of a new program called From the First Tooth.  The program was patterned after a successful North Carolina program, and operated for two years in conjunction with five partner organizations and their associated sites across the state of Maine.  The purpose of the pilot was to learn about how From the First Tooth could best be introduced, adopted, integrated, and sustained at different types of sites, including a private pediatric practice, a rural hospital and its associated primary care practices, an urban hospital-based program which serves a large immigrant population, a family medicine residency program, and a WIC site.  The Foundation and its advisors learned valuable lessons that will be critically important to achieving the Foundation’s goal of improving the oral health of every child in Maine.

In 2009, after undergoing a competitive review, the Foundation moved the operation of From the First Tooth to MaineHealth, the state’s largest health system, with a mandate to expand the program statewide.  In support of this goal, MaineHealth has forged strategic partnerships with MaineGeneral Heath and EasternMaineHealthcare Systems.
